2 years of marriage!

4.5 months

Carter turned 5 months old the same week Chris and I celebrated our two-year anniversary!  My parents agreed to take Carter for the night, so Chris and I were able to enjoy a long evening out on the town!  We tried Ounce steak house for the first time.  We waited at the bar to be seated and the bartender served me a perfectly shaken dirty martini with hand stuffed blue cheese olives.  Our waiter was attentive and friendly and the steaks were mouth-watering.  The macaroni and cheese with applewood smoked bacon lacked any real flavor and the sautéed mushrooms were served with an insane amount of garlic.  Maybe it was an off night for one of the chefs…

We brought a bottle of Swanson Alexis that was signed by the wine maker and gifted to me by my Mother-in-law.  We also brought a bottle of Pine Ridge, since that and the Swanson Alexis were the two bottles of wine we drank on the day the Chris proposed.  We decanted the Swanson Alexis and half of the Pine Ridge.  Y.U.M.M.Y.  We ran into Jordan Lord and her boyfriend, so we joined tables after dinner.  We ended the night with other friends and closed the bar down.  It was a fun anniversary and we spent it doing what we love to do; partying with each other and good friends.  🙂

At five months old, Mr. Carter is weighing in at 17 pounds!  He’s still the happiest baby and has almost conquered rolling over.  He can roll over on his side, but hasn’t yet figured out how to move his arms, to complete a full roll.  He’s eating rice cereal twice a day and loves to blow bubbles when his mouth is full of food!  When he’s on his changing pad, he feels inclined to tell me all about himself.  He jabbers and jabbers and looks at me as if I understand everything he is trying to convey.  I of course play along and love chatting it up with my little man.

Chris’ brother, Nick, came to visit Carter for the first time last week.  I think we may get to see him again next week!

My grapefruit season has ended.  I’m beyond sad.  I have spent the last couple of months juicing over 100 grapefruits, enjoying fresh grapefruit juice daily.  I’ve included a couple of pictures in the slide show!  Almost forgot to mention, Carter and Cameron had their first pool-side date.  She was dazzling in her yellowed ruffled bikini.  😉

Hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.  Details of our weekend will have to wait until the next post.

My new hobby: Worm Farming!

Mimi and her little man

My new-found hobby is worm farming!!  My husband is from New Orleans and grew up thinking that you can just stick a plant in the ground and it will grow.  That may work in NOLA but it certainly is not the case here in San Antonio!

Since our raised beds are full of clay, I bought some books and started doing research.  I purchased a gardening book from Anthropology and read an article that talked about how to get children interested in gardening.  The author started talking about worm farms and how beneficial they can be for your plants.  I was immediately hooked and set out researching which worm farm to buy!

I’ll save you the details but I’m now raising Red Wigglers and Alabama Jumpers.  I have a worm farm for the Red Wigglers and feed them daily.  I have about 500 and I’m getting 2,000 more!  They are composting worms and eat half a pound of organic wast each day, leaving us with perfectly rich castings to be used as fertilizer.  The Alabama Jumpers are larger worms that love clay soil.  They will help aerate and fertilize our beds.

Feeding the worms will be Carter’s first chore!!  It will teach him about recycling food and give us a chance to play in the garden together!  A quick shout out to Kyle Harrell for selling me my wormies!!  Visit his blog, Texas Red Worms, to read more about raising your own worms. 🙂

On to Mr. Carter and his latest and greatest achievements!  He’s growing and growing and is now 15lbs. He loves to hang on my shoulder after eating and always falls fast asleep, after his belly is full.  I know he will quickly outgrow this but it is truly my FAVORITE thing right now!

When he wakes in the morning, he works his little hand out of his swaddle blanket.  He quickly finds his thumb and pacifies himself back to sleep.  When he’s finally ready to wake up, he’ll call for me and as soon as he sees me peek over his crib, he gives me a huge, gummy smile.  He’ll usually nurse and then play on his activity mat.  He bats at his rattles and animal friends and coos all morning.  He is just so happy and sweet in the mornings, I love it!!

My Mom put together a pretty spread and helped me hold my house open for Carter’s Sip and See on Saturday.  It was a sweet afternoon and Carter looked adorable in his UT outfit from his Corpus Aunts, Elena and Mariana.  He got to meet lots of pretty women, but it was an extra special day, thanks to Betty and Jackie!  Betty and Jackie were our neighbors at my parent’s old house.  They met me when I was two and have been part of our family ever since!  Many of my childhood memories are of them helping me fly a kite and teaching me board games.  I was thrilled to get to introduce Carter to both of them!

My first Mother’s Day has come and gone.  Mimi and Grandpa babysat so that Chris could take me to the movies.  Since I read the book, Water for Elephants, I was dying to see the movie.  It’s a wonderful book AND movie but be prepared to shed a couple of tears.  The sweet old man in the movie played his part all too well.

My little man is waking up from his morning nap!  Until next time…

Carter’s first trip to the beach

Carter: "Score! My first time holding a girl's hand! Cameron: "Get your grubby hands off of me!!"

Our little man has officially found his thumb.  He’s gotten ahold of it a couple of times before, but now he can keep it in his mouth.  He’s quickly gaining more control over his limbs.  Every time you hold him he locks his legs and insists on standing up.  We of course go crazy over this and tell him he’s the strongest boy ever!

He is still nursing and we are supplementing his extra-large appetite with formula.  After his four-month check up last week, the doctor said he is ready for rice cereal.  Chris fed it to him for the first time and he loved it!  The doctor said it may take a while for him to like it, but she obviously didn’t realize what an eater he is. He had almost 30 spoonfuls his very first time!  Again, we were super stoked about this!

We decided to take Carter and his best friend Davis to Port Aransas last weekend.  Ginna, Davis’ Mom, and I basically had the same due date, so the boys are very close in weight and age.  The six of us rented a condo walking distance to the beach.  Brodie, Davis’ Dad, was hosting a fishing tournament so he drove up with a car full of stuff on Thursday.  Chris, Carter, Ginna, Davis and myself drove up on Friday afternoon.  We borrowed a small trailer from my Dad and it might be fair to compare our truckload to Clark Grizwold’s.  We had portable swings, vibrating chairs, strollers, etc.  You name it, we had two of them for our little munchkins.

It was a very fun but rather chaotic weekend. Elena & Joe were throwing a party at her Dad’s beach house on Saturday, so we were able to join the Corpus gang for the afternoon.  The beach was filled with moss and it was an overcast day, so the boys didn’t get a chance to show off their new swim trunks.  Instead, they were lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves and had their first beach pictures taken in their jogging strollers.

Carter is still sleeping through the night!!  He is starting to entertain himself on his activity mat and still loves his swing, vibrating chair and mirrors.  When he’s really happy, he talks to us in coos and gives us the cutest gummy grin you can imagine.

We are still in LaLa land, doting over this precious boy.  His closet is fully stocked with plaid shorts and brightly colored polos.  My little southern gentleman is too fun to buy for!  Mimi says I have a problem, but I say there are far worse problems to have, than a small addiction to buying sweet outfits for my little man!
